Technological innovation and continuous plant modernization are recurrent themes in the Fonderie di Montorso action plan. More than 10 million Euro has been invested over the last three years at the Crevalcore plant alone, on the latest generation systems, process efficiency and new extraction systems to improve working environment quality.
The plant director Lorenzo Tremonti explains: “We have increased the performance of the hydraulic power unit for the moulding system, replaced the moulding sand cooling system with a new fluid-bed cooler, and connected the casting cooling system in line with that for shot blasting to optimize the work flow.
We have introduced new core blowers and installed two automatic shot blasting machines to clean the hydraulic castings. For the latter, we have also created a department specifically for fibre optic inspection to guarantee that the castings comply fully with customer specifications.
There are also important changes in the melting department, with the implementation of new hardware and software to check lamellar and spheroidal castings, and a system to transfer lamellar cast iron from the primary melting furnaces to the casting furnaces.”
What positive effects have these actions had on production?
By improving plant performance, we have improved efficiency and can guarantee our customers higher and higher levels of quality, while fully respecting deadlines. Moreover, some technological innovations have further stabilized the casting processes, while automation is clearly synonymous with casting consistency and repeatability.
What does Fonderie di Montorso count on to consolidate its market presence?
Above all on our ability to make complex castings. Then the challenge is to make the processes increasingly efficient to combine competitiveness with the highest quality.
Which market segments are the most interesting in this regard?
Hydraulics is one of the sectors with the highest added value, and here Fonderie di Montorso boasts a distinctive know-how, which is evident right from the core preparation stage: We can assemble up to 11 together, with an accuracy that matches that of precision mechanical engineering.
How much does personal experience and professionalism count today in the foundry?
They are fundamental, because human intervention is essential, even with increasing automation. Being able to count on metallurgical professionals is what makes the difference. It is our main strength, together with an ability to provide the customer with a complete service: from support during product development to delivery of mechanically machined castings.
